I could only tolerate my 32" television for so long. The centerpiece to my home theater was just lacking in presentation power. Don't get me wrong, my tv was perfectly fine. In fact, it was particularly nice for a 32" tv. But I just had to have big. Real big. Naturally, the only remedy was to purchase a new wide-screen television. I spent about 5 weeks researching the tv, mostly online. I stopped by Best Buy and Video Only a couple of times to compare display technologies. In the end, I decided on the new Hitachi line. I bought a 57S715 which is a 57 inch high definition wide-screen CRT-based rear projection. This thing is a monster and I love it. Rebecca wasn't too excited about it, but she sure seems to enjoy watching Farscape and Buffy on the big screen. :)
Features? Plenty. For starters, the 57" wide screen makes anamorphic DVDs just pop. The bright, well defined colors are awesome, but most importantly, the blacks are truely black. Since we spend most of our TV time watching movies, having a TV that can display true deep blacks is critical.
By far, the best feature is the high definition display. Just one look at the DiscoveryHD Theater channel had my jaw on the floor. We were lucky enough to get the TV just in time to watch the Olympics in high definition. This is the best thing to happen to TV since color. Every little detail stands out. I could see texture on everything that just wasn't there before. It's really hard to describe without seeing it for yourself. Simply amazing.
