OPB Telethon
Along with about 30 of my coworkers, I volunteered to answer the phone and take "pledges" from callers during a telethon on Oregon Public Broadcasting (channel 10). It was a lot more fun that I expected. We basically got to just hang out, eat snacks, and laugh a lot. We were on TV about 3 times per hour for about 10 minutes each. The phones didn't ring as much as you might think. I took about 15 calls and collected a few hundred dollars. I even called my mom and got her to donate $35 and she can't even get the station where she lives! Sucker! (just kidding mom) I thought about calling all of my friends, but I figured none of them would bite and I'm not too keen on trying to sell someone something they may not want. The highlight of the day was when I got a prank call:
RING
"Thank you for calling OPB. How much would like to pledge?"
"Um, get off the air! I want to watch the program and you keep interrupting it asking for money."
"Well sir, for a pledge of only $120, you will receive a DVD of tonights show as a free gift. Then you can watch it without interruption whenever you like."
"uh, F-U" (click)

That's awesome! I'm not sure if I would be able to think of such a witty comeback so fast! Too funny! :D

The acid tongue of Jim's strikes again. I am just sad that I didnt get to watch and poke fun of you. Oh wait. No I'm not. I hate telethons.

I volunteered for that as well, the show we got was Lawerence Welk. YUCK!! We got calls like, "I think it is highly inappropriate for there to be religous programming on public television." And people calling basically to thank us for interrupting the show. Of course the best part was when my dad called in, happen to get me, and then proceed to ask for some tech support of him home computer. Yeah, I got it fixed, but no pledge.
