Fall TV: Chuck & Heroes
Heroes was terrific as always. The season 2 premiere didn't seem long enough even though there were fewer commercials than usual. I think Hiro is going to become the very warrior he idolized, literally. Noah Bennet (Claire's dad) is my favorite character and I think he will turn out to have a power, even if he doesn't know it yet.

The synergy between Noah and Claire's attempts at being normal and unnoticed is cool, especially since her dad broke first. I expect that many of the heroes will burst out of their shells towards the end of the season, kicking the show into full-on super hero comic levels. At some point, one or more of the heroes will be seen by the media and their secrets will be revealed, potentially causing many others in the world to come out of hiding as well. That would make a powerful ending to Season 2.

I'm not too excited about the introduction of two more characters though. I barely get enough time with the current ensemble... in fact, we didn't even see Niki, Micah, or Sylar at all in the premiere.

A real surprise was how great Chuck was. It had great style and struck a perfect balance between comedy, geekdom, and spy action. I had low expectations and was absolutely pleased with it.

Being a prime example of the persona they are representing with the main character, I was impressed with their use of computers, geek lingo, and general culture. The comedy was actually funny and spaced well in between excellent "Bourne" style spy action. Just when you think the show is taking itself to seriously, they flip back to hilarity and remind you that it's a comedy.

Naturally, because I like Chuck, it will be canceled after four episodes. Here's hoping this show has the ratings to keep in coming to my living room.

Dragon Avenue

Yesterday marked the culmination of over a month of work by Chibbs and I. We created a new online community for Dungeons and Dragons players called Dragon Avenue. The site focuses on DnD news, but also has a place for other geeky stuff that DnD players are interested in. Megan baked an awesome cake in the shape of the site logo! How cool is that?

The Wall, Part II
I convinced Chibbs to come down to Paddy's after work and try the wall with me. Patrick (or P-Track as he claims is his moniker amongst his friends) declined and said he'd join us next time. When we got there, I was quite excited to see "Goings" up on the wall next to first position. Chibby started with the Aberlour I had last time. Interestingly enough, he thought that it wasn't as smooth as I did.

Meanwhile, I moved onto drink number 2, another single malt scotch whiskey from Aberlour called a'bunadh. This one smelled a little sweet, but was 59% alcohol and was too potent to enjoy the flavor much. While drinking, Chibbs and I discussed that we should photoshop some better name signs so that our names can be more easily read from the bar. My trek along the wall continues! Cost: $10.00

Aberlour Single Malt Whiskey
Today, I formally resigned from WebTrends. They have treated me well for 7 years, but it's time to move on to the next challenge in my life. Some of the dudes in IT took me out for a beer. We usually hit the Yamhill Pub, a local hole-in-the-wall, but it was packed. We headed to Paddy's and sat at the bar. The bartender introduced to "the wall" where they have over 400 bottles of various liquor. If you can make it to the end of the wall, you get 20% off your drinks for life. Sounds like a goal worth achieving. I am not a big drinker, so this will take me considerable time. Nonetheless, I will finish the wall someday.

Drink one was a 16-year-old single malt whiskey from the Aberlour distillery. It was smooth, had little aftertaste, and made my tummy warm. Cost: $8.50

Satoko's Band

Today we went to the Owajimaya Japanese Festival to see our friend Satoko's band, A-Key Kyo. They play Japanese Anime cover songs and were very entertaining. Because I am not a huge anime fan, I thought that I would be somewhat disconnected from the music, but they are talented musicians and it ended up being very enjoyable. I will definately go see them again! Check out more pictures of the band.
